Enjoy the half term - please stay safe - the children are back on MONDAY 2ND NOVEMBER...

Lesson 1 – Geography

LI: To be able to understand how we attempt to stop flooding?

  • Show your child images of dams from around the world. Ask your child what they think has happened to the river at this point. Explain that the dam holds back the river in what is usually a reservoir.
  • Ask your child why we may wish to use a dam to block a river (control flow/prevent flooding/generate power).

Show short video that shows how we use dams to create power:

  • Ask your child if they can think of some negatives of using dams and what might happen if they were breached? (severe flooding, damage to homes, potential for serious injury or loss of life).

Your child shall read a case study about a dam and complete their activity sheet where they create positive and negatives about the use of dams before making their own overall judgement.
