Lesson 1

LI :To identify the language used in an acrostic poem.

Explain that an acrostic poem uses letters from a word written vertically to begin each line of the poem – see the attached Tiger poem.

We are going to use this poem to identify different features such as similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration and adjectives.

Simile - the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).

Onomatopoeia - is when a word describes a sound and actually mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to when it is spoken. (e.g.  buzz, hiss, boom)

Alliteration - is a term to describe a literary device in which a series of words begin with the same consonant sound. A classic example is “She sells seashells by the sea-shore."

Adjectives - describe, identify, or further define nouns and pronouns.

Activity

Using the poem Tigers children are to identify the topic of the poem and highlight and annotate the simile, alliteration, verbs, onomatopoeia and adjectives used in the poem.
