LI: create a conclusion
Read through the final two paragraphs of Peaches and Scream and identify the grammar you can find. In a newspaper report, conclusions talk about what is happening now after the event.
Create your own conclusion for your newspaper report on the escaped black panther. Remember to think about present tense and explaining what is happening now after the incident.
Peaches and Scream continued…
It is thought that the peach will gradually perish in the saltwater or be eaten by hungry sea creatures and it no longer poses a threat to human life. However, sailors are advised to avoid the area for the time being as a precaution.
Fruit tree experts are currently studying the old peach tree in the bottom of the garden to work out how it produced the peculiar fruit. The tree will be relocated in the town square on Friday and a prayer service will be held at 11am in remembrance of the late sisters.
LI: create a plan
Think about what we have been learning about newspaper reports. Today, we are going to create a plan for a newspaper report about a dragon attacking a village (see the pictures in your pack). Have a go at completing the planning sheet in your pack. Remember to think about and try and include the grammar and features of a newspaper report we have been learning about!
(Grammar to think about: expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, quotes (direct speech), paragraphs, past tense (present tense in conclusion), conjunctions)
- Introduction – where, when, who, why, what
- Rest of paragraphs explaining in detail what happened
- Conclusion explaining what is happening now.
LI: create a newspaper report
Children will use the plans they created yesterday to create their first draft of their newspaper report today. Remember to have a look at the following success criteria for what to include in your writing!
- Follow the structure of a newspaper report
- Fronted adverbials
- Quotes (direct speech)
- Past tense
- Expanded noun phrases
LI: edit and evaluate
Today, children will look at the newspaper report they created yesterday and edit and evaluate their work using the success criteria above. If they have included these in their writing, they can highlight them, if they have not, they can add them in using purple pen!
LI: use direct speech
Have a think about what we learned about direct speech last week. Remember speech marks need to go around what the person is saying, include punctuation before closing speech marks and take a new line for each new speaker. Visit the following website which has video clips and activities to complete, then have a go at the work in your pack.
