Half Term 1
This half term we will be placing lots of emphasis on settling your child into school and getting to know them. We will find out all about their interests and favourite things. We will be making friends, learning routines and exploring boundaries.
We will introduce a topic based on where we live.
We will be exploring how Frankley and Birmingham have changed since our Grandparents were little! We will be looking at old pictures and artefacts to help us get a glimpse of what life was like back in the 50’s and 60’s in Birmingham. We will compare then to now, exploring the houses we live in and the roads we live on, discovering how they have changed. We will construct maps using our developing mark making and writing skills.
We will look at a timeline of events and famous people that have influenced Birmingham. We will look at more recent local history, like when was Forestdale built? What did it look like? Were the teachers the same?
In Phonics, we will be starting Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds – lots of information about what we are learning can be found on our learning hub page. Phonics homework will be sent home weekly in their books (commencing 28.9.20), please spend an extra 5-10 minutes on each sound at home to support and further your child’s learning – you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to their progress!
In maths, we will be developing our counting skills, concentrating on numbers to 5 until Christmas. BBC iPlayer shows Numberblocks which we will be using in class to support our learning.
Our Talk for Writing story for this half term is “The Little Red Hen” – encourage your child to tell you the story of the hen and her friends. We will learn specific actions and phrases to help us tell the story – these will be sent home as we learn them to practise.
During child initiated play, we will be making new friends, learning to share and playing with our favourite toys! We will be learning to reason with our friends, we will push the boundaries and most of all, we will be having fun!
Awards we have received so far.
