Lesson 1

LI: To multiply 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers.

To multiply a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number you need to start with the one columns. remember to lay out your calculation like this:

 4896

x     5

Here you need you knowledge of the 5 times table. Begin by multiplying the ones column together. 6 x 5 = 30.

From this 30 the 0 will be written in the once column and the 3 (tens) will be written in the tens columns because 3 tens is 30.

Now move to the tens and multiply 5 by 9 (tens) to make 45. Do this all the way through number.

Take a look at your worksheet and complete the questions. Good Luck!
