Our class novel this half term is ...

Told with heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class is a child's perspective on the refugee crisis, highlighting the importance of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn't always make sense.
There used to be an empty chair at the back of my class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it.

He's nine years old (just like me), but he's very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn't like sweets - not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite!
But then I learned the truth: Ahmet really isn't very strange at all. He's a refugee who's run away from a War. A real one. With bombs and fires and bullies that hurt people. And the more I find out about him, the more I want to help.
That's where my best friends Josie, Michael and Tom come in. Because you see, together we've come up with a plan. . .

Spelling - we will hand out spelling homework each Friday for a test the following Friday – please help your children practise their spellings at home. Work will also be set each week on Spelling Shed to complete.

Maths – each week your child will be set some work to consolidate what they have been learning that week on Sumdog – this will help embed their learning. They will also be given a worksheet as homework when necessary. Please ensure your child completes their homework to assist them in their learning.

Spellings-  we will also be looking at the year 5/6 word list and will be randomly selecting them from the list to test each week.

Reading- every day for at least 15 mins with an adult.

Reading Books

Regular reading at home is a key component to learning. Children will be given a reading book to take home at the start of the half term. When they read with an adult, they are expected to record this in their reading journal.  For every three reads that the children complete and log with an adult, they shall receive a golden ticket to be entered for a prize draw at the end of the half term.

Please ensure you comment and sign reading record books. If your child is struggling with their book or do not enjoy it after attempts at reading it then let us know.

PE days for Year 5

PE will be on a Tuesday and on a Friday

Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on  PE days

PE Kit =  black pumps, white T-shirt or school T-shirt and black shorts.

Remember earrings cannot be worn for PE or swimming and must be taped if unable to remove BEFORE school
