Lesson 2

Look closely at the pictures of the Arctic and the desert. Write a paragraph comparing the two places. Think about what similarities and differences you can see between them. What animals and plants would live in these places?

e.g. The Arctic and the desert are very different places. The Arctic is icy, cold and covered in snow, while the desert is hot, dry and sandy. In the Arctic you might find polar bears and seals, but in the desert you might see camels and lizards. Not many plants grow in the Arctic, but cacti can grow in the desert. Even though they are different, both places can be very quiet and empty.

Example 2: The Arctic is freezing and full of snow, but the desert is boiling hot with lots of sand. People in the Arctic wear thick, warm clothes, but in the desert they wear light clothes to stay cool. Penguins and Arctic foxes live in the cold, while snakes and scorpions live in the hot desert. Both places have animals that are good at surviving the weather.
