Number 4!

We are learning all about the number 4.

Have a go at writing the numeral 4 as many times as you can!

Have a look around your house and collect groups of 4…

Use your items to split 4 into lots of groups:

2+2    3+1    1+1+1+1    2+1+1     4+0

With a grownups help you could have a go at writing the number sentences using the plus symbol.

If you are confident, your grownup could teach you the subtract symbol and how to use it with numbers up to four.

Have a go at representing 4 in lots of different ways:

Write the number 4

Draw 4 circles

Draw 4 lines – this is called a tally

Draw a flower with 4 petals

Make some number cards from 0-4, cut them up and have a go at ordering them. You can choose to stick them down or you can choose to do the activity lots of times. You can have a go at doing it BACKWARDS!

Can you think of any shapes that have 4 sides and 4 corners?

Can you find some items that have 4 sides and corners in your house?

Ask a grownup to help you sort them out into rectangles and squares.

Grownups: encourage your child to tell you why they think it is a particular shape. For example, “I can see that it has 2 sides that are shorter than the other 2, so it is a rectangle.” Encourage your child to use full sentences when explaining their reasons or choices, it develops their understanding of why and supports language development.
