Zero to Five!

We use a scheme called White Rose whilst teaching maths at Forestdale.

White Rose Maths is all about exploring numbers in as much detail and in all the ways possible to adopt mastery of maths.

We cover one number for a long time to deepen your child’s understanding of:

What it looks like as a number/numeral

1 2 3 4 5

What it looks like as objects

!      üü     QQQ    JJJJ      µµµµµ

What it splits into

1+1=2       2+1=3      5-1=4      0+3=3

What is one more or one less

2 is one more than 1            4 is one less than 5

We use practical methods a lot throughout Reception as children learn through play.

We then move onto pictorial methods when children are confident with practical and oral maths.

We then explore abstract methods which includes number sentences and using reasoning skills to explain the methods we use and the answers we get.
